Your handle and address
The rules for your handle, how to change it and how to get an old one back.
Your handle is the first part of your address: yourhandle.milkcrate.site. It is the address in your QR code, unless you set a custom domain as your main address. Put it on a business card or in a social bio. You pick it during sign up and can change it later.
Your starting handle
Milkcrate suggests a handle based on the business or Instagram profile it built your site from. The “Your address” screen in sign-up shows it, and tells you if it is available or taken. Change it there before you finish if you want something else.
Handle rules
A handle is 3 to 63 characters. It can use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens. It can’t start or end with a hyphen. Capitals you type are turned into lowercase. Some handles are reserved and show as unavailable.
Where to change it
Go to Settings, then Domain. The “Your address” card has a “Milkcrate address” row. Open it, type the new handle and save. Milkcrate checks the name as you type and asks you to confirm before it changes anything. The same card is where you connect a custom domain.
How often you can change it
You can change your handle once every 30 days. After a change, the row is locked and shows the date you can change it again.
What happens to the old address
The old address redirects to the new one for 90 days. After that it is released and anyone can take it. The confirmation before you change says links to the old address stop working. Read that as the old address no longer being your main one: it still redirects for the 90 days.
For the first 14 days, only you can take the old handle back. It appears under “Your address” with a “Reclaim” button and the date it stays yours until. Reclaiming puts you back on the old handle and doesn’t use up your 30-day limit. Milkcrate emails you 3 days and 1 day before the redirect ends.
Tell people the new address
Old links stop redirecting after 90 days. Update your bio, cards and any printed QR codes to the new address before then.
